Play On, Philly! Featured in El Sistema USA Documentary for Kickstarter Campaign
By Shannon Collins |There are nearly 500 Philadelphia-based campaigns currently on Kickstarter, the largest of dozens of sites devoted to “crowdfunding.”
One project in particular was too good for us to ignore.
With just 34 days to go, a documentary film project centering on Play On, Philly!, an El-Sistema-inspired music education program based in West Philadelphia, is coming close to their goal. 202 backers have supported the campaign, which still needs a little over $12,000 in funding.
The El Sistema program was created 35 years ago in Venezuela and set out to create social change by bringing self esteem to the lives of thousands of at risk young students by teaching them how to play classical orchestral music.
Directed by Anthony Drazan, El Sistema USA chronicles the efforts by Stanford Thompson to start up the program in Philadelphia Public Schools. The film follows the two year journey of Play On, Philly!, illustrating how music-making helps students deal with the trials and tribulations in their everyday lives.
According to the film’s website, they are “telling an in-depth story about the kids, the teachers, the community, and how the music changes all of their lives.”
