If you’ve ever found yourself strolling through South Philly and admiring the neighborhood’s collective green thumb, you might want to keep your calendar clear this Saturday.
The South Philly Food Co-op is hosting their 2nd Annual South Philly Garden Tour, their largest fundraising event of the year, with all proceeds raised to support a site analysis for an official store location. The group’s current goal is to reach 400 members in order to establish a cooperative grocery store specializing in healthy options at an affordable price for local residents.
Running east to west between 2nd and 22nd Streets, this year’s tour features over 20 public and private gardens throughout South Philadelphia, many of which are new this year. Stops include the homes of co-op members and nonmembers, as well as several community gardens, with an emphasis on home gardens.
According to their website, garden tour participants are a mix of “fruit and vegetable growers, ornamental gardeners, flower enthusiasts, rooftop adventurers, container experts, and vertical experiments.”
Check-in begins at Urban Jungle, where guests can pick up a tour map and find out additional details. Participating gardens will have their gates open for the duration of the event, with volunteers and garden owners on hand to tour visitors around.
