The Philadelphia Orchestra’s Free Neighborhood Concert Series Returns This Thursday and Friday

The Philadelphia Orchestra performing their free Neighborhood Concert Series at the RiverStage
While the Philadelphia Orchestra has been touring the world, most recently in the concert halls of China, there is no place like home.
In 2000, the Orchestra revived a tradition of free neighborhood concerts as part of its centennial celebrations to bring music into the communities where people live.
Continuing its tradition, the Orchestra is inviting the public to their upcoming performances at Curtis Arboretum and the RiverStage at Penn’s Landing.
The free concerts aim to bring the Orchestra into communities in a variety of settings, introducing the ensemble to new audiences while celebrating the diversity of Philadelphia neighborhoods.
Wells Fargo is sponsoring the series for the ninth consecutive year, committing itself to strengthening the community through increased access to the arts.
Later This Week
The Orchestra will be making its debut appearance at Curtis Arboretum this Thursday, where the performance will take place on the original site of the estate of publisher Cyrus H.K. Curtis in Cheltenham Township. Popular favorites will be performed, including Wagner’s “The Ride of the Valkyries,” Tchaikovsky’s Waltz from Swan Lake, and Stravinsky’s Suite from The Firebird.
Kicking off the Friday Night Lights firework series, the Orchestra will be returning to the RiverStage this Friday at the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing. The free summer concert will be filled with traditional classics, including Dvorak’s Carnival Overture, Wagner’s Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg, Mendelssohn’s Nocturne from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Tchaikovsky’s poetic Romeo and Juliet. The performance will conclude with a fireworks display.
The Penn’s Landing performance is an example of the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation’s dedication to building relationships with cultural organizations, such as the Orchestra, to make the arts more accessible to all.
