  • sitiCare Launches "Dining That Gives" Program with Center for Literacy

    May 20, 2013 12:00 pm - 12:00 pm online at www.siticare.com

Over half of all adults in Philadelphia, nearly 550,000 people, are considered low literate, meaning they would have trouble filling out a job application or following written directions (Excel Philadelphia). This is a reality that does not sit well with newly launched social business, sitiCare Co. and Philadelphia nonprofit, Center for Literacy (CFL).

CFL is pleased to announce that we're partnering with sitiCare to launch the 'Dining That Gives' program. This week--Monday, May 20th - Monday, May 27th--you can purchase a dining certificate and $5 will directly support CFL's programs and services.

sitiCare organizes restaurants and socially minded people throughout Philadelphia to help them give back to charity. The way it works is every week sitiCare partners with a different charity and tells the story of their impact. Participating restaurants donate $5 each time one of their dining certificates is sold on the siticare website (siticare.com)

The goal of this week's (May 20th - May 27th) partnership is to provide diners who purchase sitiCare certificates with an experience that helps to raise awareness of local literacy needs, and provides funding for adult education programs. For each certificate sold, a $5 donation will be made to Center for Literacy to strengthen programs and services that help adult students earn their GED® test credential, get jobs, go on to post secondary education and training programs, improve their English language skills and take better care of their families.

Enjoy a great meal while making an impact in your city. Grab a date, make lunch plans with a friend, or celebrate a birthday. Each sitiCare certificate is a social tool that gives to those in need and raises awareness of Center for Literacy's mission, while also providing an opportunity to enjoy a great dining experience at some of Philadelphia's best restaurants.

Garbage Warrior, is an award-winning documentary about innovative architect, Michael Reynolds and his Earthship design, a building structure that is completely sustainable. Earthships are built using readily-available and discarded materials such as old car and truck tires, empty glass and plastic bottles. Combined with south-facing windows that allow for passive solar gain, the resulting structures can be comfortable without a heating system. Equipped with a rain catchment system to provide water, indoor greenhouses that grow food all year round, and wind- and solar-generated electricity, these homes are able to be completely self-contained without being connected to public water, sewer, or electric systems.

The film screening is free. A ticket to the discussion following the film with Jonah Reynolds is $11.19.

    Concessions and discount parking available

For more information please contact: 610.931.0826 or email rashida@lovelovinglove.org

Jonah Reynolds is a world-renowned Earthship builder and educator. Jonah has presented the Earthship design to city government officials, environmental organizations and at educational facilities all over the country and around the world. He teaches at The Phoenix Earthship in New Mexico, a learning academy and visitors’ center at the Sustainable Solutions headquarters. The Earthship Academy is the only fully-sustainable off-grid school in the world that teaches sustainable design. With over 30 years of experience in building and design, Jonah has a unique expertise in the green community.

CFL is launching a social media campaign in conjunction with our 2013 SpeakOut event. The goal of the social media campaign is to create a sense of community around literacy needs in Philadelphia. Did you know that nearly 500,000 people in Philadelphia are considered low literate, meaning they would have trouble filling out a job application or following written directions? We want to bring to the forefront just how much literacy affects daily life for so many in our region; how CFL is addressing these low literacy concerns; and of course share individual student stories.

For each person who changes his or her Facebook profile picture to the “I Speak Out for Literacy" graphic or uses the Twitter #SpeakOut2013 on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, Firstrust Bank will donate $50 to CFL, up to a total of $15,000!

170 people have joined the “SpeakOut 2013 Social Media Challenge” on Facebook alone, pledging to change their profile pictures. That translates into $8,500 of our $15,000 goal. With your help, we can reach this goal and strengthen CFL's ability to serve thousands of adult learners in Philadelphia. Join the SpeakOut movement today!

    How YOU can help:

    On Facebook:

    1. Like the Center for Literacy page on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/CenterforLiteracy

    2. Join the “SpeakOut Social Media Challenge” event (this will ensure you are counted toward the $15,000 goal)

    3. Change your profile picture to the “I SpeakOut for Literacy” graphic that you see in the event

    4. Share the SpeakOut 2013 event with your Facebook friends and invite them to change their profile picture.

    On Twitter:

    1. Follow @Center4Literacy on Twitter

    2. Tweet why you speak out for literacy using #SpeakOut2013

    3. Retweet CFL’s tweets
